Who watches the Watchmen?
I did.
After being acquainted with Alan Moore’s superb graphic novel, Watchmen, for the better part of a decade, I was among the many who anticipated Zach Snyder’s film adaptation since hearing rumors nearly two years ago.
Now that I’ve seen Watchmen, I’m not quite sure how to feel about it. It was a near perfect adaptation, both visually and in story. I might as well have brought along my copy of the book and read along with the film. It was so perfect that, when there were changes in the story, they were jarring. I wonder how much of the novel’s subtle complexity will be lost on uninitiated audiences who might simply get bored.
I’m not complaining about Watchmen. It’s likely the best book to film translation since The Green Mile. And I’m sure I’d be complaining if the source material had been altered liberally in an effort to pander to the impatient masses.
